Frequently asked questions

I'm sick and I need to go to the hospital, what should I do?
First, you need to call the AXA Assistance helpline and then follow the instructions of the operator. The insurance support service operates around the clock, speaks many world languages and has an up-to-date list of contractual medical institutions and doctors. Contact details are indicated on the card of the insured.

I am abroad, can I draw up an insurance contract remotely?
Yes, of course, persons who are abroad, as well as minors, can take out health insurance, but this will require the so-called. the policyholder "pojistník" (i.e. the person who draws up the insurance contract). To conclude the contract, the pojistník must have an identity card and information about the insured person.

I'm applying for a student visa, can I get other insurance than pVZP?
At the beginning of August 2021, amendments to the law on the stay of foreigners on the territory of the Czech Republic came into force. The changes affected the conditions for obtaining comprehensive medical insurance for foreign citizens living in the Czech Republic on the basis of a long-term visa type D or a temporary residence permit (permit).

According to the new rules, in the next 5 years, it will be possible to issue and receive a compulsory medical insurance policy for a foreigner only in one insurance company - pVZP.

What happens if my insurance expired and I did not have time to buy a new one?
An insurance contract can be issued from the next day for a period of 4 months. Therefore, it is worth worrying about purchasing insurance in advance so that there are no breaks in a single day, as a fine of 50 euros may be issued, and at the discretion of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a foreigner may be deprived of a long-term stay in the Czech Republic.

Does pVZP cover if I get sick with covid-19?
Yes, all emergency medical services related to the treatment of COVID-19 are covered by foreigners' insurance, including hospitalization. Outpatient treatment is covered by comprehensive medical insurance as part of the insurance conditions.

How to make a refund after an insured event?
To receive compensation from the insurance company, you must fill out a special form and send it along with the documents below to the representative office of the company or to their e-mail (in the case of pVZP, this is oznameni.udalosti@pvzp.cz).

What documents should be attached to the form:
-- original confirmation of payment (invoice issued by a doctor or invoices issued by a pharmacy according to the prescription of the attending physician) indicating the amount and subject of payment
-- the confirmation of payment for medicines and medical equipment (crutches, glasses, orthoses, etc.) must be accompanied by a prescription (or a copy thereof) issued in the name of the insured, indicating the date of issue, the number of units and specification
-- medical certificate, doctor's report, test results, etc.

What is the difference between public insurance VZP and commercial insurance pVZP?
By law, every person on the territory of the Czech Republic must be insured, that is, have valid and paid health insurance. In the Czech Republic, there are 2 forms of health insurance: public and contractual.

Citizens of the country, as well as foreigners with permanent residence in the Czech Republic or officially employed persons can count on public insurance.

All economically active residents of the country deduct part of the funds from their wages in favor of the health insurance fund (the employer makes deductions for employees, individual entrepreneurs pay insurance on their own).

Foreigners (individual entrepreneurs, non-working family members of foreigners and students) must conclude an agreement on commercial health insurance in the Czech Republic, which in turn can also be of 2 types:
  • basic first aid insurance
  • comprehensive health insuranc
